Betrayal - 2013 Broadway History , Info & More

Ethel Barrymore Theatre (Broadway)
243 West 47th St. New York, NY

Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Rafe Spall star in Harold Pinter's Betrayal, directed by ten-time Tony Award-winner Mike Nichols. Betrayal is a strictly limited engagement, running 14 weeks only, through January 5, 2014 at the Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street).

Betrayal originally premiered at London's National Theatre in 1978 and was immediately hailed as one of Pinter's masterworks, winning the 1979 Olivier Award for Best New Play. Emma (Rachel Weisz) is married to Robert (Daniel Craig), a publisher, but she has long had an affair with Jerry (Rafe Spall), a literary agent and Robert's best friend; as, in a brilliant device, time is regained, so the full complexity of their relationships comes to light.

FEATURED REVIEWS FOR Betrayal

Betrayal, Ethel Barrymore Theatre, review
6 / 10

YOU have to applaud Daniel Craig, a film icon (thank you, James Bond) who began in the theatre and returns there still. Across the Atlantic, he's been the best thing about his two New York stage ventures to date, and when Craig is allowed to feast on the emotionally famished world of Harold Pinter's Betrayal, audiences at this Broadway season's most-anticipated offering are unlikely to feel let down.

Cheaters prosper in ‘Betrayal’
8 / 10

At the end, which is the beginning, Jerry is carefree and daring. We already know a decade of lies and cheating awaits. This is the kind of insight that makes “Betrayal” a play worth revisiting — its very structure encourages multiple viewings. Just not at $500 a pop.

The Show Must Go On at BETRAYAL; Cast Continues Through Technical Issues
by Nicole Rosky - December 2, 2013

According to the New York Post, Broadway's Betrayal ran into technical issues over the holiday weekend when automated set changes failed to work properly on Saturday night. An audience member told Page Six: "A black screen came down. After 15 minutes, Craig and the rest of the cast came out, and said they were having problems with the stage, but they were going to 'give it a shot,' and continue with the performance. They started to applause, but between each scene, the curtain came down, and the set was manually changed, which took a lot of time. By 9:30 p.m., they had only got through a few more scenes, and - while the actors made a valiant attempt to continue - some in the audience became restless and left."

Review: Nichols' BETRAYAL Doesn't Give One Pause
by Michael Dale - November 7, 2013

The new production of Pinter's power play follows the new millennium's trend of easily digestible, surface skimming, star vehicle commercial Broadway revivals of Twentieth Century dramas.
