Yeomen of the Guard, or The Merry Man and His Maid
Colonel Fairfax is under sentence of death, falsely charged with sorcery, because Lieutenant Cholmondoley wants his property. Sergeant Meryll's daughter, Phoebe, loves Fairfax from afar and wants her father to figure out a way to rescue Fairfax from the axe. The Lieutenant needs to make sure Fairfax is married, to someone who can't inherit his money, before his execution. Point and Elsie come into town with their fellow Traveling Players. Elsie needs money to pay for her dying mother's medications and Point, in love with Elsie, encourages her to take the Lieutenant's offer of money to be blindfolded and marry Fairfax, due to be executed the next day. When Fairfax escapes suddenly everything is up in the air. Not the usual topsy turvy fair from Gilbert & Sullivan. Beautiful music and a complicated plot with a surprise ending.
