The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play and its characters the special quality to make them truly touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Presented through Dramatists Play Service.

Cast and Creative team for Steel Magnolias at Carrollwood Cultural Center

Cast

Monica Van Nort

M'Lynn
MONICA VAN NORT (M’Lynn) moved from Ohio to Florida with her husband and two children in 2020. She was introduced to community theater in Zanesville, Ohio when she was cast as Truvy in Steel Magnolias in 2008. She has participated in many shows over the last 17 years. Her favorite roles to date are the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz (for obvious reasons), M’Lynn Eatonton from Steel Magnolias, and Birdie Hubbard from Little Foxes; though she enjoys every role she is blessed to be cast in. This performance is dedicated to a good friend, Dee McCarthy; the one who exposed Monica to community theater and with whom Monica had the privilege to play alongside in several shows (RIP dear friend).

Ryan MacLean

Shelby
RYAN MACLEAN (Shelby) is so pleased to make her Carrollwood Cultural Center debut in Steel Magnolias, one of her most favorite plays. She previously appeared in Tinytypes and Stage Door (Francis Wilson Playhouse), Company (Eight O'Clock Theater), and Peter Pan (Masque Theatre). Her most treasured credit is a role by the name of "Mommy" at a playhouse where the director is very tiny yet quite opinionated.

Candace Del Rio

Annelle
CANDACE DEL RIO (Annelle) is a professional singer and actress in the Tampa and Orlando area. Some of her credits include Peggy in The Andrews Brothers with Breakroom Ent., Lilly in Alabama Story with Powerstories Theatre, and Pippi in Stageworks’ production of The Great American Trailer Park Musical for which she was nominated for an award with Theatre Tampa. As her day-job, she sings with several bands in the area playing at weddings, events, bars, and theme parks but her true love is the work that is performed on stages like this one. Candace is thrilled to be a part of this classic show alongside such an amazing group of women and wonderful crew.

Clairee, M'Lynn (understudy)
JUDY HECK LOWRY (Clairee; u/s M’Lynn) is thrilled to return to Center, where she played Amanda in The Glass Menagerie. Creative Team

Robert Harling

Author
ROBERT HARLING (author) Robert Harling made his directorial debut with "The Evening Star" for Paramount, which he also wrote for the screen based on Larry McMurty’s novel. "The Evening Star" reunited Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson and co-stars Juliette Lewis, Bill Paxton, Scott Wolf, Miranda Richardson, and Marion Ross. "The Evening Star" is the continuation of one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies of our time, "Terms of Endearment." Before launching a successful stage and screenwriting career, Robert graduated from Tulane University School of Law, but instead of taking the bar exam, he opted to become an actor in New York. After years of productive work as an actor in voiceovers and commercials, Harling was inspired to write the highly acclaimed stage play STEEL MAGNOLIAS, which was based on events from his personal life. STEEL MAGNOLIAS continues to thrive in theatrical productions throughout the world. Immediately bridging a career from stage to screen, Harling adapted his original play into the popular film of the same title, which starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, and Daryl Hannah. Over the years, Mr. Harling has become a much sought-after screenwriter: other credits, to name a few, include "Soapdish," which was based on Harling’s acting experience and starred Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robert Downey Jr., and "FIRST WIVES CLUB" for Paramount, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton.
