It is little wonder that when Disney Pixar (Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Up) was searching for the perfect, authentic singing voice to feature in the soundtrack to Brave, their new 3D animated blockbuster set in 10th century Scotland, their research led them to one of the country’s true contemporary treasures – Julie Fowlis. Fowlis is a groundbreaking artist who continues to entice new audiences worldwide and push accepted musical boundaries with her adaptations of songs from her native Scottish Gaelic tradition. No stranger to awards and distinctions, winning Gaelic Singer of the Year & Album of the Year (on two occasions) the Scots Trad Music Awards, plus several other major accolades including Folk Singer of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Fowlis has graced the stage at London’s Barbican, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Mozart Concert Hall in Vienna, Edinburgh Castle, Glasgow and Dublin Concert Halls. As part of the internationally acclaimed Transatlantic Sessions 4 series on the BBC, she has sung with James Taylor, Martha Wainwright, Stuart Duncan, Dònal Lunny and Liam O’Maonlai (Hothouse Flowers), as well as with Bill Whelan (Riverdance), John McCusker, Eddi Reader, Danú, and Salsa Celtica. Fowlis, who sings in both English and Scottish Gaelic, has released six critically acclaimed recordings for the Shoeshine, Machair, and Macmeanmna labels, and has been a guest artist on numerous others.
