The Tampa Museum of Art is staging a mid-career survey for one of the leading video artists working today. No Limits: Janet Biggs is on view until January 8, 2012. The exhibition was conceived of and organized by the Tampa Museum of Art and is the first full survey of the artist's career.

"We're proud to be the first museum to showcase a survey of this very significant artist's career thus far," said Todd D. Smith, the Museum's executive director. "Janet has earned an international reputation for her daring work and has appeared in over 100 solo and group exhibitions. Not only has she won accolades from art critics, but audiences consistently find her work enthralling." Reviews of Biggs's work have appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Artforum, ARTNews, Art in America, Flash Art, Artnet.com, and many others.

Biggs's work has been exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and Oceania. "This exhibition has great significance for the city of Tampa," Smith said. "Janet has always been interested in using the latest technology to capture her subjects. But her themes are timeless. She's recognized by critics in New York and other art centers as one of the leading artists working in video today."

For more than a decade, New York-based video artist Biggs has explored the tense relationships between athleticism and human ambition, individualism and community, and free will and control. Her work has focused on sports and natural environments and has ranged from a claustrophobic pool where synchronized swimmers test their lung capacity to the vast expanse of the High Arctic where ice caps - and a way of life - may be vanishing. Her diverse subject matter also includes speeding motorcycles on the Bonneville Salt Flats and horses galloping on treadmills.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with contributions by some of the leading voices on video and contemporary art, including Andrea Inselmann, Nancy Princenthal, Berta Sichel, and Todd Smith.

The Tampa Museum of Art opened its new award-winning home in 2010 with a commitment to providing innovative public programs with a strong focus on modern and contemporary art. The Museum balances a growing collection with a dynamic annual schedule of special exhibitions. It is the region's largest museum devoted to art of our time and has built a reputation for embracing contemporary photography and new media. The Museum's 14,000-square-foot LED installation on its façade is on its way to becoming an iconic image for the city of Tampa. In 2011, the Museum was awarded an American Architecture Award, one of only 45 honorees in the world.
