St. Petersburg Opera's Emerging Artists, the young singers who understudy the principal roles in the opera productions, will present two performances, on May 28 and May 29, 2010. The first performance, an abbreviated version of the opera "Carmen," will feature many of the most famous musical numbers from the opera and will use the set, costumes, and staging from the mainstage performances. The second performance, the Emerging Artist Spectacular, takes place on Saturday, May 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the American Lithuanian Club, 4880 46th Ave., N., St. Petersburg. A preview to Carmen, the program will include insightful commentary by Mark Sforzini, Artistic Director, and Dean Anthony, Stage Director. The singers will perform with piano accompaniment and will not be using the costumes and staging of the mainstage production. There is a school production at 10:45am on Friday, May 28, at the Palladium Theater, 253 Fifth Ave., N, St. Petersburg and is open for students and invited guests.
In both performances, the Emerging Artists will be joined by John Tsotsoros, the principal who is playing Don Jose in the Saturday, June 5 performance of Carmen. Tickets for the Emerging Artist Spectacular are available from the SPO Box Office, 727-823-2040 or at the door. All seats are general admission and are priced at $15 each.
St. Petersburg Opera Emerging Artists are chosen for each production to over roles. The singers gain experience in the roles, learn the staging and receive workshop instruction and individual coaching. Many of the Emerging Artists from past productions have gone on to perform principal
roles in both SPO and other opera company productions.
