The Barn Theatre, a non-profit playhouse that has called a renovated mid-20th century rose barn their home for nearly 48 years, is breaking box office records this season. This spring the theatre's volunteer board of directors celebrated their 40th consecutive mainstage production that performed to a completely sold out run.
The Barn is closing their record-breaking 47th season with a special engagement while welcoming a local favorite back to their legendary stage. Young phenomenon, Nicky Wood, will bring to life a solo concert that offers a taste of Time Square to Stuart in a way the local theatre scene has never before seen.
"Nicky is a well known entertainer on the Treasure Coast...he presents only the finest productions. Audiences love his work. From great vocals to over-the-top choreography, he brings his audiences everything they could ever wish for." said Barn Marketing Director, Chris Mazzella.
Nicky, a nationally acclaimed actor, singer, dancer, director and choreographer, has brought one-of-a-kind entertainment to the Barn's stage for a decade, first as a performer, then as a producer, and now as a 22-year-old up and coming star. "I'm so excited to be back home on my one weekend off and to have another chance to play on the stage I call my childhood playground!" said Wood.
Wood is now seeking adventure abroad as a Production Show Stager assisting in live broadway-caliber entertainment for cruise ships under the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings fleet.
"From the first time we at The Barn met him, we were struck by (his) self-confidence and eagerness to learn. We saw he had talent...we made an investment...we were amazed at his vision, his organizational skills, and the respect he earned from his much older cast. That show was a hit, and the investment has certainly paid off over the years! Every one of his productions has sold out and benefited us both artistically and financially." said Francine Beckstead, President of the non-profit 501c3 theatre.
The Barn is proud to have debuted their broadway-level stage lighting and a totally new surround sound system this season. All of which are terrific "toys" Nicky will use to make his work come to life as he not only directs and choreographs himself, but he also does his own lighting design among his other assorted production skills.
Nicky does not do it alone, however. He credits the love and support of his family and almost-family for inspiring him and working tirelessly by his side to make each dream a reality.
Nicky's mother and stage manager, Lori Wood said, "(He) is a perfectionist and the process is fully immersive! He will work 24/7...well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration...20/7 in the weeks leading up to the show to ensure everything is exactly the way he envisions it...there have been many of mornings we have been eating dinner/breakfast at Steak 'n Shake or Perkins at 2 or 3 AM because they're the only places open on the Treasure Coast at the time. Oh, and we don't get to just eat and relax...we are also having a production meeting to discuss anything that wasn't perfect just yet and how to make tomorrow better."
At the Barn on June 16 at 2 and 8 PM Nicky will debut his first one man show, YES SIR, THAT'S MY BROADWAY.
From Porter to PIPPIN, Cohan to COMPANY and Sondheim to SOUND OF MUSIC, YES SIR, THAT'S MY BROADWAY is a one-day-only song and dance hit parade of 114 years of Broadway history, including unforgettable melodies by Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber and many, many more.
"We are very proud to have had a part in his artistic development, and he is truly a member of our family." said President Beckstead.
"Nicky is CREATIVE, with all capital letters." remarked Nicky's father and spotlight operator, Nick Wood, Senior. "He is continually taking on new works and exploring the old ones. And he always has at least a half a dozen ideas going around in his head."
Why wait until the next show to find out what the buzz is all about? And who knows when he will make it back again? Catch him while he's in South Florida on June 16 in YES SIR, THAT'S MY BROADWAY. For tickets, call (772) 287-4884 or visit Barn-Theatre.com. Tickets $20.
