The School of Theatre at Florida State embarks on a romantic exploration of life, body, and soul in Tennessee Williams' psychologically stirring drama Summer and Smoke, directed by BFA Acting Assistant Professor Michael Hayden. The production runs from Nov. 2-11 in the Lab Theatre, located on Copeland Street between St. Augustine and Lafayette.

During his lifetime, Tennessee Williams received virtually every theatrical award available, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and several New York Drama Critics' Circle awards. He is distinguished as one of the most accomplished playwrights in the American theatre. Williams originally entitled this play as Chart of Anatomy when he began working on it in 1945; however, he revised the title by its Broadway opening in 1948.

Set in Glorious Hill, Mississippi from the "turn of the century through 1916," Williams takes us on a tumultuous journey between Alma Winemiller, the unmarried minister's daughter, played by Victoria Nugent, and the unruly, bad-boy doctor next door, John Buchanan Jr., played by Ben Peterson. As Alma pines and John lusts, the complex relationship between these long-time friends changes as their spiritual and physical worlds collide.

Reverend and Mrs. Winemiller, played by Daniel Mutis and Allison Haglund respectively, are Alma's restricting parents. Brittany Rosoff plays the town's sultry vamp, Rosa Zacharias. Nellie Ewell, played by Ali Wilson, is Alma's youthful and impressionable pupil.

Hayden remarked, "It's a daunting play for young actors because Tennessee Williams writes about longing, desire, the soul, unfulfilled passion and need… but, my cast is game, they are hungry and ready."

Summer and Smoke conjures both sensual and spiritual sensations that are undeniably irresistible. The School of Theatre at Florida State's smoldering production exposes that where there's smoke, there really is fire.
