Spanish Lyric Theatre and SLT Productions, the nation's oldest Hispanic theatre company and the longest running theatre in the greater Tampa Bay Area, has announced its 56th consecutive main stage season. SLT performs its Broadway musical offerings in English and also offers Spanish language productions through the season.
In its first season since the retirement of founder and original artistic director, Rene Gonzalez, Spanish Lyric Theatre has selected a dynamic and ambitious season as it ushers in the next generation of the storied organization. A diverse, three show main stage season has been selected and will coupled with a professional theatrical cabaret series.
"This is a wonderful season of transition for Spanish Lyric Theatre," says Interim Artistic Director, Michael Mathews. "We are thrilled to be presenting three vastly different shows: one features some of the most popular and famous Latin music, the second- the works of some of the most successful composers in Broadway history, and the third is one of the most popular new musicals to come from Broadway- and the most ambitious endeavor for SLT in recent memory."
The main stage season opens with MUSIC OF THE KNIGHT: THE SONGS OF SIR ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER & FRIENDS, a theatrical cabaret originally conceived by Mathews and longtime SLT performer/director, Jorge Acosta, which enjoyed tremendous success during its previous Florida tours under Mathews' direction. Next comes the smash hit FOUR GUYS NAMED JOSE... AND A MUJER NAMED MARIA which was produced Off-Broadway by Latin pop-music artist, Enrique Iglesias. Finally, the biggest show of our season will be SHREK THE MUSICAL making its professional, non-equity Tampa Bay debut. The show features a huge cast, lavish production values, and, of course, everyone's favorite ogre.
MUSIC OF THE KNIGHT and SHREK THE MUSICAL will be presented in English.
FOUR GUYS NAMED JOSE... will be presented in both Spanish and English.
Spanish Lyric Theatre's 56th season is presented by Tampa Bay-based TheatreWorld Backdrops, supplier of thousands of Broadway-caliber theatrical backdrops annually to theatres, dance companies, schools, and event planners around the country.
Tickets will be available for the entire season or on an individual show basis in the coming days.
