In February, The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art launched the next phase of its New Stages series with New Sincerity, featuring artists who seek to redefine the parameters of performance and contemporary art.

New Stages, an integral piece in The Art of Our Time visual and performing arts initiative at The Ringling, "brings unique works from genre defying artists," said Steven High, executive director. "Our entire campus is the stage in these performances created in unusual spaces throughout the grounds and galleries. The Ringling is proud to foster an environment where artists can communicate with visitors in innovative ways."

"In New Stages: New Sincerity, each performance group is focused on community with a desire to make performance art accessible to all," said Sonja Shea, project coordinator. "For each performance in the series, The Ringling was able to work with artists who have created meaningful and unique performances that exemplify community and allow the visitor to truly feel like part of the performance."

In March, the series continues with a unique experience from the Institute for Psychogeographic Adventure (IPA). Experiment #42.000 (RINGLING) leads each visitor through a series of personalized performance encounters ranging from the intimate to the spectacular in elaborate experiments that uncover the psychogeographic qualities of The Ringling galleries and gardens. Performers will be from the IPA as well as from the Sarasota community.

The season closes with Captive by Motionhouse. Inspired by Rilke's The Panther, four dancers in a large cage blend dance and aerial work in a provocative consideration of how a human, like an animal, can be plucked from normal life and plunged into captivity.

The Ringling inspires visitors with an acclaimed collection of Old Master paintings, explores with them the diverse cultures and art of Asia, delights them with the story of the American circus, and transports them to the Roaring Twenties during a tour of the magnificent Ca' d'Zan mansion.

The Ringling is also committed to exhibiting the work of an emerging community of living artists that moves beyond traditional practice and features dynamic and engaging contemporary visual and performing arts, including a diverse roster of theater, music and dance.

The Ringling is the State Art Museum of Florida. Affiliated with Florida State University, it is one of the largest university art centers in the nation.
