Opera Naples has announced its first opera of the "Come Alive!" 2016/2017 season, Puccini's Turandot, performed at Artis Naples on November 9, 2016 at 8pm. It's chilling storyline includes a vengeful, beautiful princess playing a deadly game of riddles with noble pursuers and a prince that challenges her to the very end. This international favorite will be scheduled for one night only at Artis Naples located at 5833 Pelican Bay Boulevard. Although loved by locals, Naples has also been recognized as a luxury destination for those seasonal guests that combine their visit with an ocean view hotel/or home, fine dining, boutique shopping and the arts.

When asked about Opera Naples as a destination venue, Jerry Goldberg, Opera Naples Chairman responds, "Our city receives many visitors and seasonal residents with the anticipated desire to experience both paradise and cultural fulfillment. Opera Naples is proud to present an international cast of artists to kick off its "Come Alive!" season with a worldwide favorite opera, Turandot, followed by a strong season of performances." Tickets can be purchased online at operanaples.org or by calling 239.963.9050.

Talent:
Opera Naples Artistic Director, Ramón Tebar, a popular conductor worldwide in both the orchestral and opera arenas, takes the helm to lead the orchestra with a sweeping score of Puccinin's riveting harmonies and powerful melodies. Renewing his third year with Opera Naples, the respected and talented Mr. Tebar has scheduled a pulsating and innovative season featuring beloved operas and classical concerts, cross-cultural infused concerts, international sought-after talent, and an exclusive opera (student) program with the world's beloved opera star and teacher, Mme. Renata Scotto.

American soprano, Marcy Stonika as Turandot, The Princess of Peking. Ms. Stonikas' 2016-2017 season begins the season as Gertrude in Seattle Opera's Hansel and Gretel, then sings the titular Turandot in debuts with Atlanta Opera and Opera Naples. During the summer of 2017, she essays a title role with the Berkshire Opera Festival. Marcy Stonikas is a winner of the 2013 George London Foundation Vocal Competition and First Prize winner in the Wagner Division of the 2013 Gerda Lissner Foundational Vocal Competition. She was a finalist in Seattle Opera's 2014 International Wagner Competition. "In the title role, Marcy Stonikas was fearless, hurling the riddles at Calàf and riding the massive ensemble at the end of the second act. There was sweetness as well when the music revealed Turandot's vulnerability. It was an impressive debut, and it would be good to hear more from Stonikas." Joe Law, Opera News

Italian-Brazilian lirico spinto tenor, Thiago Arancam as Calàf, the Prince of Tartar. A native of Brazil, Thiago was the first Brazilian accepted to the Accademia of La Scala under the tutelage of legendary soprano Leyla Gencer. He is a past winner of the Operalia Competition. In the last year, Thiago Arancam has performed the following: Turandot with the Simon Bolivar Symphony under Gustavo Dudamel; Aukland Philharmonia orchestra, Tosca in concert with the London Philharmonic in Royal Festival Hall; and Un Ballo in Maschera with Malmo Opera in Sweden. Additionally, he will be seen this season in Gomes' Fosca in Sao Paulo and in Turandot with Pittsburgh Opera.

Plot:
"People of Peking! Turandot the pure will marry the one born of noble blood who solves her three riddles. But he who tries and fails will pay for his failure with his noble head." These opening lines set up the dramatic, ancient fable of Giacomo Puccini's final opera set in China about the desirable Princess Turandot pursued by men of noble blood each risking his life for her royal hand in marriage.
