Moscow Festival Ballet brings their stunning production of the evening-length classic Swan Lake to the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts' (formerly the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center) Ferguson Hall on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m.
Set to the beautiful and familiar Tchaikovsky score, Swan Lake, like all the best tales of enchantment, involves a beautiful princess, a passionate prince, and the wicked force that is an obstacle to their happiness. The ballet tells the story of the beautiful Princess Odette who, under the spell of the evil von Rothbart, has been turned into a swan and must swim in a lake of tears for all eternity until a prince swears eternal infidelity to her. Tchaikovsky's first ballet, Swan Lake is considered by many to be one of the greatest classical ballets of all time, mesmerizing audiences for more than 100 years. The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko sought to realize his vision of a company which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet. Under Radchenko's direction, this exciting company stages new productions of timeless classics such as Giselle, Don Quixote, Paquita and Swan Lake.
Since its inception , the Moscow Festival Ballet has completed two tours of Europe, with extraordinary receptions in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. Two tours of the United Kingdom, including capacity audiences at London's famed Coliseum, have resulted in numerous return engagements. The company has also performed with great success in Turkey at the Istanbul Festival and in Greece at the Athens Festival and recently completed a two-month tour of Japan, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong.Regularly priced tickets for the Saturday, Feb. 27, 7:30 p.m. performances of Swan Lake by the Moscow Festival Ballet start at $29.50 and may be purchased by calling 813.229.STAR (7827) or 800.955.1045 outside Tampa Bay, in person at the Straz Center Ticket Office or online at www.strazcenter.org.
