WEDU Television host Cathy Unruh and Tampa attorney Tom Scarritt are putting aside their day jobs on April 25 and becoming actors for the night. Unruh and Scarritt are two of the headliners in a staged reading to benefit at-risk youth in Tampa Bay. The performance is being produced by the Impromptu Players of Stageworks Theatre to raise money for the Stageworks Outreach Program which teaches at-risk youth about anger management, tolerance, AIDS, gang prevention, and empowerment through the use of theatre.
The performance is called a staged reading because the actors will be reading from their scripts. However, they will also be moving around the stage, using props, wearing costumes, and performing with sound and lights. The play is REGRETS ONLY, a comedy by
Paul Rudnick. The show is set in the glitzy realm of Manhattan society with a world famous gay dress designer and his best straight girlfriend, a fashionista socialite who cares more about parties than politics. But see sparks fly when the designer learns that his girlfriend's attorney husband is writing a constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage. REGRETS ONLY was produced on Broadway in 2006 with
Christine Baranski in the lead role which will be played by Unruh in this performance.
