Monty Python's Spamalot opened on Friday, November 15 in the Gompertz Theatre at FST (located at 1241 North Palm Avenue, Sarasota FL). Artistic Director, Richard Hopkins, speaks to FST's record-breaking success of the show. "The FST audience is loving Spamalot. A fairly significant portion of the FST subscriber base looked at the choice of Spamalot with suspicion. They saw it as a little weird, a little wild and not really up the FST alley. Well, that has changed completely! Our subscribers love the show. It puts 'comedy' back in the phrase 'musical comedy'. And in the FST tradition, it is not your 'usual musical'. It is offbeat.
With returning actors like Patrick Noonan and Priscilla Fernandez, audiences will recognize some of the faces on stage. There are also introductions to be made. With new company members like Kevin Loreque, Jacob Hoffman and Samantha Mills, audiences have been driven to the point of total hilarity in a show that is fun and definitely memorable.
One exciting aspect of this show is the new audience it has attracted to FST. Hopkins elaborates further stating, "We're finding an entirely new audience: The "Pythons" have found FST. Those are the people who love Monty Python. They came to see Spamalot, and now they are finding that many plays and musicals are "pythonesque." This word may have entered the lexicon because of the British television program, but before that, we in the theatre knew it as "surreal comedy" dating back nearly 100 years. Python or not, Spamalot is a musical comedy with an underbelly of intelligence rarely seen in modern musicals."
The show is directed by returning FST Director Bruce Jordan, who previously directed hit comedies such as The Underpants, Perfect Wedding and Shear Madness, on which he was one of the original co-producers. From the skilled direction, to the colorful and wacky costumes and of course, the beloved dialogue quoted by the true Python fans, Spamalot is a show that has earned its reputation on the stage.
Audiences have been raving about Monty Python's Spamalot: "I saw it in New York, and it's just as good as Broadway." "We saw Spamalot last night and feel FST has set a new standard for excellence." "Unbelievable!" Critics have agreed. Jay Handelman of the Sarasota Herald- Tribune described it as a "well-constructed musical, staged with a sense of fun" and "performed with...enthusiasm." The Observer stated, "The curtain goes up, you start laughing and then you don't stop."
Monty Python's Spamalot will continue to be performed in the Gompertz Theatre through January 25, 2014. Single tickets are $42 - $45 and may be purchased from the FST Box Office in person, by calling 5(941) 366-9000 or online at FloridStudioTheatre.org.
