Actor Becca McCoy's entertaining and heart-warming tour-de-force cabaret will be presented again by popular demand at American Stage.
There will be another chance to catch Becca McCoy's solo cabaret, THE PEARL IN THE HOGWALLER this fall. The October 23rd and 24th performances of THE PEARL IN THE HOGWALLER, as part of the American Stage After Hours Series, is a return by popular demand to American Stage, after both August performances sold out, had seating capacity increased by 40%, and sold out again.
Becca McCoy went from being a working actor in Chicago to a stay at home mom in Palatka, Florida, and lived to tell the tale, as a cabaret. The award-winning national performer, a native of St. Petersburg, crafted a taut hour-long solo-show giving the universal story of 'blooming where you're planted' a fresh and engaging treatment in THE PEARL IN THE HOGWALLER, whose title comes from Palatka's wildly popular and best-known attraction: a mudbog.
Previously seen in Tampa Bay at the Palladium Theatre Side Door, New American Theatre, and as part of the 2011 Eckerd College Celebration of the Arts, Becca went on to perform the show at the renowned Davenport's Piano Bar and Cabaret in Chicago. In October, THE PEARL IN THE HOGWALLER will again be performed in the American Stage Lobby Cabaret, and full cash bar service is available to all patrons.
Pushing the envelope of traditional cabaret, THE PEARL IN THE HOGWALLER blends the intimate story-telling and the art of repurposing pre-existing songs that is cabaret with the five-act format and emotional arc of traditional theatre to create a unique and engaging live performance. Becca's witty life-observations have been called "modern Erma Bombeck," and her four-octave range adds an unexpected and dynamic treatment to the music, as does the inimitable James Weaver, Becca's friend and long-time collaborator, on piano.
Containing nearly 20 songs ranging from pop, country, novelty, standards, and showtunes, and using traditional writing and excerpts from what Becca shared on social media, THE PEARL IN THE HOGWALLER explores how we cope in our modern era, how we retain our identity when our world suddenly changes, and finding the good no matter what life throws at you. Because, as we all know, sometimes, life is muddy...
Becca McCoy is a proud native of St. Petersburg, who has been seen on stages locally and nationwide. She is known to Tampa Bay audiences for her performances in DISENCHANTED! as Sleeping Beauty, for which she won the BroadwayWorld Tampa award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and as Brooke, the working mom, in MOTHERHOOD THE MUSICAL, both performed for extended runs in the Jaeb Theatre at the Straz Center. Becca went on to perform the role of Brooke in MOTHERHOOD THE MUSICAL in two other states, and was then brought into GFour Productions' other smash-hit, MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL, which she has performed in Reno, Nevada, upstate New York, and on national tour.
Becca was the recipient of the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance's inaugural MUSE People's Choice Award in 2014, and has been awarded in musical theatre nationally by Young Arts (formerly the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts), and the National Society of Arts and Letters.
