Tonight, Opening Nights of Florida State University will be presenting a special performance of Twyla Tharp Dance to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The Dance Company is one of the best known contemporary dance and choreography companies in the country, whose choreographer, Tharp herself, has worked extensively with the American Ballet Theatre, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and won various awards through her life.
The performance will feature Preludes and Fugures, commissioned by the Joyce Theatre, with music from Johann Sebastian Bach performed by David Korevaar and Angela Hewitt. The second half of the program will showcase a set of nine Sinatra classics, including Strangers in the Night and My Way.
Tharp is know for combining various styles of movement: jazz, ballet, boxing, and inventions of Tharp's own making. Tharp's work challenges and pushes the boundaries of modern dance, ballet, and visual performance.
Twyla Tharp Dance performs February 8th at 7:30. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Student tickets are $15.
