When a violinist thinks of Tchaikovsky there's the Violin Concerto, of course! But there are other beauties for violin and orchestra, including his Souvenir d'un lieu cher (literally the 'memory of a dear place') and the 'Melancholy Serenade', which finds loveliness and serenity even in sadness. This is Tchaikovsky at his most graceful and expressive. There's one more spotlight for the violin with Mozart's 'Strassburger' concerto, showing all the elegance and vitality that Tchaikovsky so admired. Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony brings drama to the program with its fateful fanfare, dreamy waltzes, whirlwind virtuosity and a festive finale. Perhaps, says Tchaikovsky, it's possible to drown your sorrows in the joy of others. We know for sure you'll leave this concert with a smile.
