By Oscar Wilde
Adapted and directed by Kip Williams
The five-star cine-theatre spectacular is back!
Following sold out seasons in Melbourne and Adelaide, The Picture of Dorian Gray returns once more to Sydney Theatre Company before it’s set to take the world by storm. Don’t miss the show that Time Out called “a reinvention of theatre”.
This breathtakingly innovative production coined the “cine-theatre” genre – incorporating live and pre-recorded video with live performance and enabling a single performer to nimbly shapeshift and play all of the dark tale’s 26 characters in an audacious cascade of theatrical transformations. Eryn Jean Norvill will reprise her “tour de force” (Guardian) performance for 14 shows only.
Building on a career-long fascination with theatrical innovation and spectacular reinventions of classic stories (Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Suddenly Last Summer, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui), STC Artistic Director Kip Williams has written an adaption of Wilde’s century-old fable of beauty and a deal with the devil that is a magnificent mirror to our times. After a wave of five-star reviews, Williams returns with a team of some of Australia’s finest theatre-makers, to reconjure this production that has rightfully been celebrated as “genius” (Limelight).
A scintillating mix of cutting-edge contemporary theatre design, lush period drama, and astonishing live video, this vibrantly contemporary adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray is a “dazzling masterpiece no one should miss” (The Age).
