A celebration of pioneering Australian theatre and performance takes centre stage in the heart of The Hills with the inaugural Pioneer Play Festival. The Pioneer Play Festival brings Sydney’s theatre lovers for two days of new and pioneering Australian plays, workshops and kid’s activities celebrating the inaugural theme ‘Australian Voices’.
Curated by Artistic Director Goldele Rayment and presented by theatre makers Company of Rogues, the festival will feature the Sydney premiere of Felix Nobis’ play ‘Boy Out of the Country’ - a searingly funny contemporary bush ballad about family, urban development and the progress of life told in Australian vernacular verse, directed by Erica Lovell.
For lovers of classic Australian theatre, a very special once-only 50th Anniversary performance of Alex Buzo’s powerful exploration of race, culture and identity - ‘Norm and Ahmed’ - will take to the stage on November 23.
The Pioneer Play Festival will also include a new national playwriting competition, the Pioneer Play Award. The award aims to encourage the development of new Australian theatre by rewarding an outstanding novice, emerging or established artist for pioneering new theatrical work. The award will be presented by Mayor of The Hills, Dr Michelle Byrne, at a gala event that will include a staged reading of the winning entry and a glamorous Mayoral reception on Friday, November 23rd.
