Alisa Weilerstein will be the envy of every cellist in the SSO when she takes to the stage to play Dvo?ák. This concerto is loved as much by musicians as by audiences. And no wonder: it blends heroic Romantic feeling with folk-inspired vigour and a tender memorial to his sister-in-law. Dvo?ák had his favourite cellist in mind when he wrote it, just as Lutos?awski composed his simple tribute to Paul Sacher for the great cellist Rostropovich to play. And Brett Dean, the SSO's Artist in Residence, will conduct Lutos?awski's masterpiece, his Third Symphony. It brilliantly combines the drama of a powerful motif (imagine the opening of Beethoven Five) with the silvery and ethereal effects of Lutos?awski's signature style.
Program:
LUTOS?AWSKI
Sacher Variation for solo cello
