If you've been waiting to hear the Sydney Opera House's Grand Organ in all its power and beauty, this is the concert for you. It begins in the 18th century with the great Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporary Johann Gottfried Walther, then jumps to the 19th century with Felix Mendelssohn and Max Reger. This is the German organ tradition at its most magnificent: grand, lively and virtuosic, but also capable of mirroring the expressive power of a full orchestra. Although, the music's not entirely German: listen closely and the concerto appropriated from 'Signor Meck' turns out to be by Vivaldi!
Program:
JS BACH Prelude and Fugue in D, BWV 532
JG WALTHER Concerto in B minor, after Signor Meck
MENDELSSOHN Organ Sonata No. 2
REGER Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, Op.135b
