Head East is a photographic series that celebrates some of the special places we find at Sydney's Northern Beaches. It focuses on the uniqueness of each road that finishes at the beach, the spot that defines one entry point from another.
Head East records the landmarks and the activities that take place around them, Some entry points have not changed for generations and one can connect childood memories and dreams with certain markers and viewpoints. Other areas have changed due to new infrastructure, special events and sand movement.
The series was photographed and re-photographed over three years in order to present a flow of observations in one unbroken line of images that stretches 22 metres. It commences with the four wheel drive track that leads to Barrenjoey Lighthouse and finishes at North Head, looking South East towards South Head and Macquarie Lighthouse.
Head East is also about shared history. What is it that keeps an individual or family returning to "our beach"?
"My own connection to these beaches goes back to my great-great grandfather, Captain Francis Hixon who was responsible for building both Barrenjoey and Macquarie Lighthouses in the 1880s," says Tim. "I've spent my life here and my Arts Practice has been about recording our ocean lifestyle, the sea and the people who live here. It's my backyard so this is a project very dear to my heart."
All 91 images were shot using film-based plastic cameras which produce a slightly fuzzy dreamlike look. Tim Hixon has been using and exhibiting works made with these cameras for many years and is well known for his book BEACH. He recently appeared as a judge on the ABC TV series Photo Finish.
HEAD EAST is part of the Manly Arts Festival. Entry is free.
