The Seymour Centre has unveiled the incredible line up of productions making up the 2018 Program at the venue.
In a huge coup for the venue, a highlight of the 2018 program is the Sydney premiere of the latest work from award-winning theatre company, Complicité. Last seen in Sydney in 2016 with their smash hit The Encounter, Complicité will present A Pacifist's Guide to the War on Cancer in March following its season in the UK.
A Pacifist's Guide to the War is a funny and moving show about newfound friendships, pain and death, mundane treatment cycles, hairlessness and scars...with songs and dancing. A must-see on the theatre calendar for 2018!
During July, leading independent company, Outhouse Theatre Co, will present the Australian premiere of The Rolling Stone by rising British playwriting star, Chris Urch. With direction by Adam Cook (Sport for Jove's Much Ado About Nothing and A Doll's House), the show is a powerful and gripping play where family, faith and paranoia collide. Shining a light on bigotry and the battle to be yourself in an unforgiving society, it is a play for our challenging times.
Joining the program in July is ILBIJERRI Theatre Company with Which Way Home, in an eagerly anticipated return to Sydney after a sold-out Belvoir season. Infused with humour and heart, Which Way Home draws on writer Katie Beckett's own memories of growing up with her single Aboriginal father.
As part of a partnership with Mardi Gras to mark its 40th anniversary, an incredible line-up of LGBTQIA productions will feature at the Seymour Centre including the return of drag legend, Mitzi Macintosh, in her first ever one-woman show, Mitzi Macintosh: A Lifetime in Lipstick; and Siren Theatre Company's Playlist, in which writers, theatre makers and new talent are invited to share unique LGBTQIA stores on stage.
Returning to the stage in August will be the Seymour Centre's resident company, Sport for Jove Theatre Company, with a new production of Orson Welle's ingenious adaptation of Moby Dick; and again in October with the world premiere of Ear to the Edge of Time by one of Australia's greatest contemporary playwrights, Alana Valentine.
Ensuring there is something for the whole family, the Seymour Centre will partner with Sydney Theatre Company to present The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark, the fun-filled adaptation of the Shakespeare classic from The Listies.
Seymour Centre Artistic Director, Tim Jones said "Seymour's 2018 program celebrates the connection between great ideas and great performance. It features artists and companies of renown (such as Complicité) making major works that are artful, entertaining and that intelligently investigate significant challenges of our time. I'm looking forward to the whole program, but, in particular, it will be great to see a majority African cast tackle Chris Urch's urgent play, The Rolling Stone, from the UK (soon to premiere at the Lincoln Centre) plus to see great Australian works including a timely revival of Tommy Murphy's classic, Strangers in Between and to finally experience Alana Valentine's Ear to the Edge of Time which won the STAGE International Script Competition from over 200 entries."
