Sydney Theatre Company's latest Rough Draft, The Long Forgotten Dream, culminates in a free, one-off showing on Friday 17 February at 6.30pm in Wharf 2.
During a week-long creative development, playwright H Lawrence Sumner will work with director Leticia Cáceres to develop this early draft script. They will be joined by actors Bruce Carter, Maggie Dence, Rarriwuy Hick, Shari Sebbens, Terry Serio and Meyne Wyatt.
This first play by H Lawrence Sumner is inspired by real life cases of Aboriginal Australians' remains being repatriated after previously being held in museums overseas. It focuses on one family coming to terms with the trauma of their past and examines the intergenerational consequences of colonialism.
From the Ngarrindjeri nation in South Australia's Coorong, H Lawrence Sumner is a writer, creative performer and singer / songwriter. A directing graduate of NIDA, Sumner has performed and directed theatre since 1992, most notably with the Adelaide Theatre Guild, Magpie Theatre and State Theatre Company of South Australia.
Leticia Cáceres has directed for most mainstage companies in Australia and her work has toured nationally and internationally. She was Associate Director for Melbourne Theatre Company from 2013 to 2015. She is the co-founder of nationally-acclaimed RealTV with multi award winning playwright Angela Betzien.
STC's Rough Drafts support the development of new works by providing artists with opportunities to experiment and grow new ideas. Writers and directors are given access to rehearsal space, actors and creatives and dramaturgical support. They may use the week and resources to embark on something currently unscripted or they might choose to develop a script that is already complete in draft form.
Sumner, Cáceres and their team of actors will present the results of their week-long Rough Draft process in a free public showing on Friday 17 February at 6.30pm in Wharf 2.
