Sydney Theatre Company is calling for applications for the 2019 Emerging Writers Group.
Now in its third year, the Emerging Writers Group aims to encourage the next generation of Australian playwrights, supporting their professional development while expanding their skill sets, artistic vision and networks.
STC Artistic Director Kip Williams, who implemented the program, says it is an important pathway for developing writers.
"Sydney Theatre Company is committed to finding and developing new Australian voices and this program is a wonderful way to do this. We hope to expand and diversify the Australian theatrical canon and help new writers discover and hone their own distinctive voices," Williams says.
The group of four emerging writers will meet regularly throughout the year-long program (May 2019 to May 2020) and will receive mentorship from STC's Literary Manager and
Resident Artists, including the Patrick White Playwrights Fellow and Associate Director. The group will attend all of STC's productions, company runs of STC shows and take part in workshops with STC artists, as well as have opportunities to discuss with mentors the work they see and create.
The program is open to emerging writers from Sydney and surrounding suburbs. Participants must be able to regularly commute to performances and meetings at STC. The successful four writers will receive a small honorarium.
Applicants are required to complete an online application form and submit their CV, a writing sample and a statement explaining why they wish to be considered for the program. Applications close on 8 April 2019.
