Squabbalogic Independent Musical Theatre, producers of the sell-out smash independent musicals THE DROWSY CHAPERONE and MAN OF LA MANCHA, are proud to present the Sydney premiere of GREY GARDENS, as part of the Seymour Centre's Reginald Season, from 18th November to 12th December 2015.
Adapted from the cult classic 1975 documentary by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Doug Wright, the darkly thrilling, quirky and heart-breaking musical explores the dysfunctional relationship between socialite Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Little Edie, as they languish in the derelict East Hampton manor known as Grey Gardens.
This award-winning Broadway musical follows two women, Jackie Kennedy's aunt and cousin, from their heyday as rich and socially polished aristocrats to their eventual largely isolated existence at the decaying estate.
Directed by Squabbalogic artistic director Jay James-Moody (Man Of La Mancha), with musical direction by Hayden Barltrop (Sondheim on Sondheim) and choreography by Shondelle Pratt (Carrie The Musical), GREY GARDENS will feature a cast of Sydney's finest musical theatre talent. Beth Daly (A New Brain) will transform from Big Edie in the first act to Little Edie in the second, with Caitlin Berry (Ruthless!) and Maggie Blinco (Biddies) assuming the roles of Little Edie and Big Edie respectively.
"Grey Gardens has been on the Squabbalogic bucket list for many years," said Jay James-Moody. "The documentary is one of the most poignant and captivating character studies captured on film, and that same heartbreak and humour has been maintained for this exquisite musical theatre adaptation. Adding to that, the calibre of our cast and creative team is sure to make this an unmissable night out."
The first Broadway musical ever based on a documentary, GREY GARDENS is a feast of tour-de-force performances, with a beautiful score, and intimate lyrics that the New York Times described as "an experience no passionate theatre-goer should miss."
