Michelle St Anne, Founder and Artistic director of The Living Room Theatre says "She Only Barks at Night is a performance installation that illuminates some of the University's most historic, but often overlooked sites. The work will see these heritage beauties inhabited and reinterpreted by scientists, performers, musicians and even a live horse."
Experts from all walks of life involved in the project include: renowned headwear designer Rosie Boylan (The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge); taxidermist Gavin Burland who is currently the Vice President of the Australasian Institute of Anatomical Sciences (AISAS) and considered one of the leading plastination experts in Australasia: Bliss a 4 year old Warmblood Andalusian mare standing 16 hands high and Kate Fenner, her trainer, who has trained horses around the world.
A talented quartet of four young performers from Burwood Girls High will once again lend their talents to the production with choreography by hybrid artist Imogen Cranna and costuming by Lian Loke.
Along for the ride to compliment the engaging visuals will be live music by accomplished trumpeter Shota Matsumura & Double Bass player Clayton Thomas with compositions by Julia Reidy. Sydney Morning Herald's John Shand has described Shota's music as "so rare that the resultant music tattooed itself on the memory". Clayton is a seasoned talent, having performed regularly in Berlin and elsewhere and is also the co-founder of the NOW now Festival. Julia Reidy is an accomplished Jazz composer who released her newest album, Spaces Between, last November.
Michelle St Anne is the recipient of the 2013 National IDEA (Interior Design Excellence Awards) Award, in the event category. She has a long history in working with traditional and non-traditional spaces in Melbourne and Sydney, having graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2003 and University of New South Wales too long ago (1991).
"The Living Room Theatre will guide an intimate audience into a world where the future is framed by narratives from the past." says St Anne. "They will be invited to engage and interact with this created world, and experience a journey through the science and arts precincts of the University. Weaving remarkable accounts of female hysteria of the 19th century and the controversial hypnosis treatment developed by Jean-Martin Charcot, it explores the dark misperceptions of the mind, from the past to the present as contemporary theatre merges with installation, exhibition and performance to twist the audience's mind."
