Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash hit rock musical, School of Rock announces Brisbane and Sydney seasons for 2019.
The much-anticipated musical of 2018, School of Rock premieres in Melbourne this week at Her Majesty's Theatre.
Today Worldwide Executive Producer, Madeleine Lloyd Webber and producer GWB Entertainment, announced that following the Melbourne season, the production will embark on an Asia Pacific tour including a national tour of China as well as seasons in Brisbane at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC from July 2019 and the Capitol Theatre in Sydney from November 2019.
School of Rock features an incredible cast of 31 performers including 12 extraordinarily talented children aged nine to 13 years of age alongside some of Australia's leading stage performers including Brent Hill as Dewey Finn and Amy Lehpamer as principal Rosalie Mullins.
Since opening on Broadway to critical acclaim in 2015, School of Rock has been playing to packed houses and is now captivating audiences across the US and in London's West End. The production has smashed box office records, garnered rave reviews, earned four Tony nominations, and won both the 2017 Oliver for Outstanding Achievement in Music and the 2017 WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Musical.
Based on the hit film starring Jack Black, School of Rock follows Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star trying to earn some extra cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. But Dewey isn't going to teach his straight-laced students' algebra or arithmetic, oh no. These kids are going to learn what it takes to become the most awesome rock 'n' roll band of all time.
With a new score from Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by three-time Tony nominee Glenn Slater and book by Downton Abbey's Oscar winning Julian Fellowes, School of Rock is an hilarious and thrilling night at the theatre for all audiences from eight to 80. The production captures all of the charm and irreverence of the original film and features an incredible cast, scorching riffs and epic ballads all played live.
In announcing the Asia Pacific tour, Lady Lloyd Webber said, 'I had the opportunity to see the new Australian production ahead of its opening and I was truly blown away. This is the fourth production of school of rock to open following Broadway, the west end and the US tour and it absolutely holds its own. The cast is incredible, the band of kids who play their instruments live every night are total professionals.'
After its debut Australian season in Melbourne concludes in 2019, the production opens in Shanghai at the Shanghai Grand Theatre before touring throughout China before returning to Australian shores for the season at QPAC's Lyric Theatre in Brisbane, followed by the Sydney season at the Capitol Theatre, Sydney
