A new play by Sydney actor and playwright Rowan Freeman is inspired by his real-life arrest in 2011 and includes some dialogue taken directly from a recording of the subsequent police interview. Safety Switch, directed by Eden Falk and featuring Freeman alongside Warwick Allsopp, Mansoor Noor and Fiona Pepper, is at the Old Fitz from 13 to 24 May 2015 as part of the venue's late night season.
As they carry stage props outside a theatre at which they've both been performing, two actors are arrested. Taken for questioning to a police interview room, the men naively believe that their innocence will be enough to ensure the incident is nothing more than a humorous misunderstanding. However, the arresting officers have very different ideas.
Safety Switch is a funny yet confronting exploration of how a seemingly ridiculous scenario can develop into a wholly serious and ethically provocative situation. The play was shortlisted for Playwriting Australia's National Script Workshop in 2013.
Director Eden Falk is known to Sydney audiences for memorable recent performances in Belvoir's A Christmas Carol, Sydney Theatre Company's Macbeth and post's Who's The Boss?, as well as numerous STC Actor's Company productions including The War of the Roses and The Season at Sarsaparilla.
