Romance And Science Collide In Nick Payne's CONSTELLATIONS

In Nick Payne's award winning* play Constellations the infinite multiverse is distilled into a tender lover story between astrophysicist Marianne and beekeeper Roland. Directed by Victor Kalka and playing at the Chippen Street Theatre, the production stars Alice Birbara and Henry Hulme.

Constellations is the fifth collaboration between Kalka and Birbara, named a "formidable creative pairing" by Sydney Arts Guide, and is also Birbara's final performance in Sydney before commencing a Masters of Acting at the Bristol Old Vic.

Birbara is one of 14 applicants from all over the world, and the only Australian, to win a coveted place in the course which boasts an illustrious list of alumni, including Sir Patrick Stewart, Naomie Harris, and Daniel Day-Lewis.

"It's sad to see Alice go, but she has an incredible opportunity to train with the best at the Old Vic. I also have a wonderful opportunity to work with her one last time, creating Constellations" said Kalka.

Constellations is told through a series of vignettes that flicker across the stage, telling the story of Marianne and Roland. Moments are repeated, and the smallest word or gesture can alter the course of their lives.

"Looking for patterns in nature is a very human thing to do - constellations themselves are just a random cluster of stars that we've assigned a meaning - and it's exciting for audiences to join the dots in the play and create the story with the actors."
