As the sun sets over Sydney, Sky Terrace lights up with an impressive DJ line-up playing everything from hip-hop to soul, electronica to jazz. Sydneysiders are invited to kick back with friends before or after a Festival show, enjoy the panoramic harbour views with a sunset cocktail or two or jump into Glitterbox, a truly unique installation from local contemporary art collective zin.
A select line-up of local and international DJ's will play at Sky Terrace this January. Adi Toohey comes armed with a hefty bag of wax spanning house, disco, funk and soul. Over the past year she has played at some of the country's top festivals including Falls Festival, Splendour In The Grass, OutsideIn, and Subsonic. She's supported Jack J, Beautiful Swimmers, Hunee, The Black Madonna, Soichi Terada, Jonny Nash and Tornado Wallace as well as promoting Rimbombo parties and playing the coveted Saturday Sunset slot at independent music haven FBi Radio.
Commonly known as 'Australia's First Lady of Disco', CC:DISCO! has been spreading the good gospel across dance floors and over the airwaves since 2010. Her unflinching ability to command a dance floor with her eclectic signature disco, boogie and house sets has made her a sought after international DJ, playing shows throughout North America and Europe. She's also conquered local festivals Strawberry Fields, Falls Festival, Sugar Mountain, Paradise Festival, Boogie Festival, Groovin the Moo and of course recently Splendour in the Grass.
Saturday nights will be curated by Funkdafied, an Event Promotions Company based in Sydney Australia promoting regular quality events encompassing many music genres including Soul, Jazz, Funk, Afrobeat, Latin, Disco, Reggae and Hip Hop. Funkdafied have toured and organised events with major International Artists including George Clinton, Parlament, Funkadelic, Norman Jay, Roy Ayers, Robert Glasper Experiment, Kashmere Stage Band and many more and this will be their 5th year working with Sydney Festival. They are looking forward to providing a line-up of DJs throughout January at the Sky Terrace, including: JC, Patrick Curda, DJ Jon, Frenzie, The Groove Merchant, Elchino, Eddie Mac and Russ Dewbury.
Misbehaviour firmly planted her roots within the essence of 90's club culture and made her mark at premier London venues such as Hanover Grand and Subterania (both winners of the prestigious MOBO Awards for best club). One of the most memorable was a private party for Prince. Now based in NYC Misbehaviour has blessed the decks at Output, Brooklyn Bowl, Santos Party House and The Roxy. In the summer she is one of the resident DJs in Central Park, for the world renowned roller-skating disco and also a resident at Mobile Mondays (NYC's premier vinyl 45 party), spinning alongside such New York Icons as Biz Markie, Danny Krivit and Just Blaze. Misbehaviour will be bringing her central park roller jam vibe to Sydney in January.
After purchasing his first set of decks in 1988 and working with a hip-hop crew in his native Austria, Nick Toth packed up his turntables and relocated to the sunny shores of Australia where he has been heavily involved with the local music community and club culture as a DJ, producer, promoter (JamRock!, StepForward!, Make It Clap!, Dancehall Queen Australia), radio host (2SER, FBi, ABC, SBS) and music educator (Australian Institute of Music). He has also shared the stage with a multitude of artists such as Common, Public Enemy, Talib Kweli, N.E.R.D., Missy Elliott, Jungle Brothers, 50 Cent, The Roots, Grandmaster Flash, Slum Village amongst many others, and spins a dizzying blend of hiphop, soul, funk, disco, dancehall reggae, soca, zouk, and afrobeat.
Part of Sydney's Afrobrasiliana crew Paris Groovescooter plays Latin, disco and old school funk everywhere from underground club nights to outdoor festivals.
Simon Caldwell avoids the stifling 'style' classification so many other DJ's trap themselves into, keeping himself free to draw on his varied loves of deep, soulful house, techno, funk, jazz, electro, booty, hip hop and anything else which catches his ear. Simon has supported a list of international acts longer than your arm, including Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, James Brown, DJ Sotofett, The Black Madonna, Todd Terje, Rolando, Herbert, Claude Young, Maurice Fulton, Grace Jones, DerRick Carter, Vakula, Moodymann, Actress, Onra, Moritz von Oswald, Charles Webster, Fred P and Frankie Knuckles, to name just a few. He currently holds down Monday Sunset on FBI Radio, and is resident/co-promoter of Mad Racket, a Sydney underground party institution running since 1998.
It is safe to say that Stephen Allkins aka [Love-Tattoo] could rightly claim the trademark of "Mr.Disco". His extensive record collection & his infamous sets at warehouse parties, raves and clubs over the years and legacy is also a testament to that. He is one of the true pioneers of dance music in Sydney, playing at the very first disco clubs and warehouse parties from 1978, the original DJ's DJ who has seen and done it all.
