Barangaroo Delivery Authority has today commenced its exciting new October school holiday program Acrobat's Academy, where world-renowned circus and physical theatre company, Gravity & Other Myths, will bring its first Sydney-dedicated children's workshop program to The Cutaway.
Mesmerising feats of strength and acrobatic athleticism will leave children awestruck as the acrobats from Gravity & Other Myths showcase an excerpt of their multi-award winning performance, A Simple Space.
Then, it's over to the kids to get involved. Children will partake in movement games, floor based acrobatics and group acrobatic workshops encouraging them to work cooperatively and take calculated risks, all under the watchful eye of highly-skilled experts.
Gravity & Other Myths' acrobat and Tour Manager Simon McClure said:
"Acrobat's Academy will encourage children to explore their own potential, both physically and mentally. This is an opportunity for kids to push themselves and try things they wouldn't ordinarily have the chance to experience, all whilst gaining a better understanding of their body's capability."
Gravity & Other Myths' show A Simple Space has achieved huge international success, receiving multiple awards and having been performed more than 500 times across 24 countries. Described as "Cirque du Soleil with a fistful of grit" by UK Express and "an awe-inspiring display of strength, skill and creativity" by the Advertiser.
Acrobat's Academy is an extremely rare opportunity for children to be trained by highly skilled and globally acclaimed circus professionals.
Barangaroo Executive Director, Activation and Precinct Manager, Sandra Bender, said:
"Barangaroo is excited to be presenting yet another internationally-acclaimed Australian physical theatre company, Gravity & Other Myths. We want to establish Barangaroo as a place where families can enjoy affordable, interactive and extremely rare opportunities to learn from world-class Australian performance artists in a safe and welcoming environment."
The workshops will welcome children aged between 5 and 12 years of age. No previous experience is required to join in on the action.
Barangaroo Delivery Authority is responsible for the development of Barangaroo on behalf of the NSW Government, and for the delivery of high quality urban design and public spaces. As part of this remit, the Authority oversees the delivery of public art, cultural activities and public programs within the precinct. Responses to the form, geography, rich history and future of the Barangaroo site are integral to the design and delivery of the program. The 2015 Barangaroo Public Art and Cultural Plan covers 11 hectares of public domain and represents one of Australia's largest suites of public art and cultural activity. The Plan outlines nine priority public art and cultural programs for delivery by 2020, including a series of cultural activities and civic events. In recent years, this has included: Creative Planet, a sold-out season of parkour and acrobatics workshops with physical theatre company Legs On The Wall during the April school holidays; Aurora Eora, a beautiful collaboration with the Gondwana Choirs and acclaimed contemporary artists, which brought Barangaroo to life through song and art; Four Thousand Fish, a free Sydney Festival installation curated by Emily McDaniel that invited visitors to return frozen fish-shaped sculptures to the water surrounding Barangaroo Reserve; and Papillon, a large-scale temporary artwork by leading Australian artist, Nike Savvas, that suspended dramatic coloured ribbons above Exchange Place.
