IRONBOUND to Have Sydney Premiere at Kings Cross Image

For twenty-two years Darja sits at derelict bus stop littered with cigarette butts and broken beer bottles. An immigrant from Poland, she negotiates for her future with men who can offer her love or security, but never both. The hope of a better life in America is turning out to be impossible.

Martyna Majok, recipient of this year's Pulitzer Prize, has crafted a play about the constant battle to eke out a modest existence as a woman at the bottom of the heap. It's a story of the highs and lows of life, rich with dark humour, fiful joy and constant struggle underneath the crumbling highway overpasses of New Jersey.

An enthralling drama about the women we overlook.

"You seldom see plays that are both harsh and wonderful, but that is the balance that Polish-born playwright Martyna Majok strikes...she writes with such energy and charisma that the play's four characters feel vivid and real...The play never sugarcoats, yet it steers clear of bleakness because Majok's language is so entertainingly alive." - The Washington Post.

For director Alastair Clark: "Many of us forget the immense physical and emotional labour undertaken daily by working-class women. This is a play that finally showcases that neglected perspective in all of its complexities and contradictions. At its centre is one of the great, powerhouse female roles of contemporary playwriting. Martyna Majok has written a shockingly funny and ultimately devastating play that will challenge and excite Sydney audiences."

Alastair Clark directs a stellar cast featuring Gabrielle Scawthorn (The Village Bike, Hurt, The Sound of Waiting), Benedict Wall (The Village Bike, Home and Away, Underbelly), Abe Mitchell (Darlinghurst Nights, Love Child), and Ryan Morgan (A Town Named Warboy, #lads).
