Hilary Bell's adaptation of Moliere's classic satire The Hypochondriac will make its long awaited debut at Darlinghurst Theatre Company from 9 June - 1 July.
In this world premiere, Playwright Hilary Bell transforms Moliere's comedy for Australian audiences, blending a nostalgic use of comic genres with vaudeville, slapstick, and a touch of burlesque. There is no denying this adaptation is unlike any version you have seen before.
Argan (Gilshenan) is a needy and controlling patriarch of a household of women, and his hypochondria is the perfect means to keep them at his beck and call. But when his self-obsession extends to selling off his daughter in return for on-tap medical attention, his housekeeper Toinette (Mastrantone) decides it's time to fight back.
Director Jo Turner has assembled some of Australia's finest comic actors, including Darren Gilshenan (ABC's The Moodys, Harrow), Gabriel Fancourt (A Comedy of Errors) Sophie Gregg (Deathtrap), Emma Harvie (A Midsummer Night's Dream), Lucia Mastrantone (Kill Climate Deniers), Jamie Oxenbould (The Dapto Chaser) and Monica Sayers (The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui).
Playwright Hilary Bell said "everything that happens on stage in this show couldn't happen on the screen, [The Hypochondriac] is a celebration of what theatre can be."
