A spectacular puppetry and dance show, the Chinese New Year Gala Night will blend puppetry performance, music and dance showcasing the soul, charm, emotion and culture of China performed by the Chengdu Puppet Theatre and Yuhualong Art Troupe of Xi'an International University.
The Chinese New Year Gala Night will feature the face-changing and fire-breathing skills unique to Sichuan opera as performed by the Chengdu Puppet Theatre. More than 10 different masks are changed in just several minutes, while the puppets' eyes glow and breathe fire, known as a great stunt of Chinese puppetry.
Puppetry has a long history in China, having been passed down through the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties and becoming more popular during the Qing Dynasty after the formation of Sichuan Opera. The Chengdu Puppet Theatre has performed in America, Africa, Asia and Europe and this will be their Australian debut.
The Yuhualong Art Troupe of Xi'an International University was founded in 2000 in Xi'an and presents a mix of traditional and modern Chinese dance. The troupe consists of nine subordinate branches; the folk dancing group, the hip-hop dancing group, the chorus group, the instrument group, the theatre group, the reciting group, the etiquette team, the hosting team and the stage design section.
