The iconic Thai drag and transgender cabaret comes to the Big top at Moore Park with THAILAND LADYBOY SUPERSTARS. Presented with polish, class and a good dose of comedy, over 20 'Ladies' and 5 men provide an entertaining night leaves most traditional drag shows in its feather strewn wake.
With a staggering number of sequined, bejewelled, feathered costumes that would fit in easily at the Moulin Rouge or Las Vegas, the troupe mime, dance and act their way through a series of well known hits. Whilst some drag shows seem like an endless parade of 'Girls' badly miming and not doing much else, THAILAND LADYBOYS SUPERSTARS is a full energy blend of burlesque, cabaret and comedy.
There is a balance of performance styles, ranging from the dance focused numbers with a stage full of 'chorus girls' and the occasional addition of 4 male dancers, to solos that are up close and personal in some cases. Big dance numbers show of the flexibility and costuming and the solos and trios allow the 'Lady's' to show their personality and special talents such as the expressive Whitney Houston interpreter. The night includes many well-known pop hits and drag show standards along with a lovely song about Thailand, with ensemble dressed in ornate interpretations of traditional Thai costumes.
Each 'lady' has amazing makeup, costuming, physical expression, and often surgery, which does leave the audience with a state of disbelief that these 'ladies' were born boys. Their interaction with the audience is the main proof that these 'ladies' aren't as feminine as they'd like us to believe as they finally get to talk to the audience, letting their crafted high voices crack to reveal moments of deep masculinity.
Whilst the show has Burlesque elements and Vegas Showgirl costuming that is pushed to it's limits at times of rigorous dancing, it is not rude or crude. The audience interaction is fun and not designed to make participants feel uncomfortable as some other cabaret shows seek to do which is a refreshing change. Whilst the show is traditionally for adults, the booking website does say that they do allow guest 16 years and above and the material presented is well within what most senior high schoolers have seen through other forms of entertainment and media. The show is presented under the big top tent at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park and has refreshments and food on for sale before the show and during intermission and there is the opportunity to have your photo taken with the performers for a small fee so a night at THAILAND LADYBOYS SUPERSTARS is more than just seeing a show, it is an experience and an event.
THAILAND LADYBOYS SUPERSTARS is a fantastic night of fun, feathers, fine costumes and general fabulousness. Whether you've seen Ladyboys or drag before or not, go see this.
