Sex and Manhood are the stuff of Geraldine Brophy's THE VIAGRA MONOLOGUES. Off The Avenue Productions is presenting the Australian Premiere at the Blood Moon Theatre, The World Bar this June.
Geraldine Brophy wrote this collection of intimate reflections as an exploration of masculinity. "I know that truth can be got from imagination as much as experience, and is a negotiable noun. So I decided to make it up. This is my business. As an actress and a writer, I employ skills that are dedicated to pretending, in order to shape untruth as truth"
Parenthood, marriage, celibacy, promiscuity, puberty and virginity, are all common human experiences, not the province of any single gender or sexual identity.
John Molyneux, Meynard Penalosa and Tom Matthews inhabit a variety of characters from three to 83. It's a show about much more than penises; they are baring the male emotional landscape.
Funny, touching and sometimes sobering in its connections between male sexuality and the violence men do to themselves; The Viagra Monologues celebrates men and challenges social perceptions about masculinity.
"Whilst the show is light-hearted in some respects, it's fundamentally about respect. Respect for each other, men and women, regardless of our sexual connection or otherwise," said Geraldine.
Samuel Lucas Allen, recently nominated for the Robin Anderson Film Award, is directing this production of The Viagra Monologues. "It asks us to reconsider what it is to be a man, what men can do to be there best selves. As a director it presents a playground of enigmatic characters to explore and understand "
The play has received widespread critical renown
"This is an exceptional piece of theatre. Sublime writing and acting make the Viagra Monologues a riveting show" The New Zealand Herald.
"They are a moving and perceptive set of monologues presenting male sexual life in a new light"
National Business Review.
The Australia Premiere of The Viagra Monologues plays from 16 June - 2 July at the Blood Moon Theatre in World Bar, Kings Cross.
