The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will travel to Western Sydney this week to perform eight interactive concerts for more than 4,800 school students as part of its world-class education program.
The concerts, held at the Parramatta Riverside Theatre on the 7, 8, 9 and 10 March, will be attended by Kindergarten to Year 10 students from 35 schools across Greater Sydney, including Campsie Public School, Toongabbie Public School and Canley Vale High School.
SSO Managing Director Rory Jeffes said: "The Sydney Symphony Orchestra recognises the importance of Western Sydney as one of Australia's fastest growing and most diverse regions. As the state orchestra for New South Wales, we are committed to providing young audiences from this important area the opportunity to experience a professional orchestra with the aim of inspiring them to pursue their own artistic talents."
As well as watching the SSO perform, students will have the opportunity to engage with the orchestra in an interactive workshop-style setting through being invited to ask questions, move along to the music and even conduct the musicians.
Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the interactive concert series offers almost 5,000 students a first-hand experience of the state symphony orchestra in one of Western Sydney's prime cultural venues.
"I encourage residents across Western Sydney to attend one of the many SSO events held in the region each year, including the free annual concert in Parramatta Park and concerts and workshops for students and teachers."
The concerts are arranged around the theme "Olympian Orchestra" and will showcase music that has accompanied some of the world's most memorable sporting moments, including the theme from Rocky, Fanfare for the Common Man and Olympic Fanfare.
The SSO is grateful for the support of Sydney Airport, the proud presenting partner of its Schools concerts.
