On Monday night the Sydney theatre community gathered at the Old 505 Theatre to celebrate the Silver Gull Play Award, now in its second year. Sponsored by The Buzz from Sydney, the award celebrates new work that is brash, bold and cheeky.
From an exciting shortlist the judges awarded the $2000 prize to People Will Think You Don't Love Me by JoAnna Erskine.
"This year, local playwrights took on the big issues and ideas, and they did it in ways that were both funny and deeply moving," says Paul Gilchrist, subtlenuance's artistic director and convener of the award. "The scene is absolutely alive with brilliant new work."
The event included the announcement of the award and excerpts from the shortlisted plays directed by Helen Tonkin and performed by actors Hailey McQueen, Shiv Palekar, Matilda Ridgeway and David Woodland.
The shortlisted plays were:
People Will Think You Don't Love Me by JoAnna Erskine., A matter of life and death by John AD Fraser, The Ink Trail by Louis Klee, This, This Is Mine by Duncan Ragg, I sat and waited but you were gone too long by Olivia Satchell
