The Grand Théâtre de Genève Ballet Company is quickly gaining international reputation for its contemporary interpretations of great ballet classics, commissioning the work of the best young choreographers of our time to build its repertoire. Igor Stravinsky already has pride of place in the company’s work: two different versions of Petrushka and a Rite of Spring over the past decade. Andonis Foniadakis first produced his Rite of Spring in 2007 as a solo piece with a small background group of dancers. For the 2012-2013 season, he will redesign this choreography to include the company’s 22 dancers. The second half of the evening will add a new item to the Company’s list of Stravinsky pieces: Les Noces. This work, originally choreographed in 1913 by one of the first great female choreographers, Bronislava Nijinska, will also be revisited by a woman: the Dutch dancer and choreographer Didy Veldman. Both artists will provide their own visions of music raging from the sinuously elegant to the shockingly brutal; music that suggests the extreme, unconventional power of human physical movement.
