Sieglinde dies in childbirth, naming her son Siegfried. The petulant child is brought up by Mime, who knows only the fearless boy can retrieve the Ring from the dragon Fafner that guards the Rhinegold hoard. But no weapon is strong enough for Siegfried until the Woodbird tells the boy how to repair the broken pieces of his father’s sword. The young man then kills the dragon and hears the Woodbird again, telling him of a woman sleeping on a rock ringed with fire. Siegried sets off to learn about fear by finding love in the arms of Brünnhilde.
