H.M.S. Pinafore or The Lass that Loved a Sailor is a comic opera in two acts with music composed by Arthur Sullivan and words by William S. Gilbert. It opened in London on 25 May 1878. With its 571 performances, it was the longest running show up to that time. The performance will take place in English.
The story takes place on the deck of the British warship H.M.S. Pinafore. Josephine, the captain’s daughter, has fallen in love with a sailor from the lower deck, Ralph Rackstraw, although her father had intended for her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, Minister of the Navy. At first she goes along with her father’s wishes, but a speech by Sir Joseph about the equality of all men encourages Ralph and Josephine to question the division of social classes. They declare their love for one another and then plan to elope in order to get married. The captain discovers their plan but, as in other Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, a last-minute revelation completely changes the way the story ends.
H.M.S. Pinafore was the fourth time that Gilbert and Sullivan worked together and the first of their operettas to achieve international recognition. The success of the show in the United Kingdom, the USA and elsewhere in the English-speaking world led to further Gilbert and Sullivan collaborations. Their operettas, now known collectively as the Savoy Operas, dominated musical entertainment on both sides of the Atlantic for decades and even today have retained their popularity throughout the world. The structure and style of these operettas, and particularly H.M.S. Pinafore, were widely adopted and had a major influence on the development of modern musical comedies.
