An Enemy of the People is now playing at Theater St. Gallen. Performances run through 4 April.

Spa Doctor Dr. Stockmann discovers that the healing waters of his hometown are infested with pathogenic microorganisms. The reason: the supply pipes lead through a swamp area contaminated with sewage. In the public interest, Stockmann wants to publish the finding in the newspaper and calls on the city administration to relocate the water pipes. His suggestion meets with approval. Influential citizens and press representatives assure him of their support.

However, his brother Peter, the city councillor, has serious concerns: spreading the news threatens the economic prosperity of the spa town, and the repairs would result in high costs for the general public. Suddenly, Stockmann's support among the city's decision-makers begins to dwindle. Doubts are sowed about his intentions and attempts are made to cover up the news of the contaminated water. Stockmann insists on clarification and wants to speak publicly.

In an all-important speech, he wants to force the city on its course. He accepts the final break with his brother and the risk of complete personal exclusion. He's no longer just concerned with the polluted spa: his target is society as a whole.
