When a little boy finds a plane in a cabinet he jumps course in and fly into space. But the fuel runs out and the trip ends with a crash straight down on the moon. It proves to be more that have become stranded there, a small marsian for example. Perhaps a boy and a Martian help each other to find the way home again? When you are lonely and small, the most unexpected friendships occur.
The way home is based on a children's book by British author and illustrator Oliver Jeffers and directed by acclaimed British director Katie Mitchell. The opera premiered at the English National Opera in 2014 where it was a huge success. The way home is recommended for children ages 3-5 years, a perfect introduction to the magical world of opera with contemporary music where unusual instruments like ping pong balls, pots and pans mixed with violin and clarinet!
The set is a collaboration between English National Opera, Young Vic, the Opéra National de Paris, and Royal Swedish Opera.
