The minister Stiffelio preaches in his church and to his family about the importance of forgiveness. But what happens when he himself is betrayed? Is he able to forgive and to live up to his own ideals?
Stiffelio is an opera about infidelity, divorce and murder. During the composer's lifetime, it was perhaps his most daring and modern opera. At that time it fell prey to the censors, and the subject remains equally provocative today. In 2011 it finally received its first performance in Scandinavia, and Tobias Theorell's critically acclaimed production is back at the Royal Swedish Opera for the 2013/2014 season. The role of Stiffelio is sung by the Italian tenor Andrea Carè who recieved praise for his performance in Theorell's production of Un ballo in maschera at the Royal Opera in 2012.
