Prince Golaud is out hunting when he suddenly hears someone crying in the woods. On a lake he finds Mélisande who is lost and can not find homes. She becomes Golauds bride and travels with him to his grandfather, King Arkel, gloomy castle. There she meets Pelléas, Golauds half-brother, and drops her wedding ring in a fountain.
