Giacomo Puccini's opera about Cio-Cio San, called Butterfly, who forsake their family, their faith and their culture in order to marry the American Lieutenant Pinkerton, is one of the opera world's most popular and played works. This set directed by Kirsten Harms, the former director of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, was a huge success when it premiered at the Opera in 2014 and has been sold out since.
A dramatic love story that begins with a grand wedding where the American Lieutenant Pinkerton marries his beloved Butterfly. She, in turn, believe in His eternal fidelity and love, despite the fact that he is leaving her. She is willing to wait for him forever. When Pinkerton finally returns, he finds a lost woman with a child, still at the abandoned place where they celebrated their wedding.
