The sixth annual J! International Symposium was held in Stockholm last weekend. The event was sold out at the 500 seat Stora Salongen Theater at The Berns Hotel. World renowned speakers, moderators and performers included: Sandee Brawarsky (Jewish Week), David Denby (The New Yorker), Agneta Furvik (Swedish Radio), Judy Gold (Comedian), Adam Gopnik (New Yorker), Stewart F. Lane (Broadway Producer & Author), Tony Michels (UWisconsin), Letty Cottin Pogrebin (Ms Magazine), Annie Polland (American Jewish History Association), Ricki Neuman (Swedish Daily News), Jody Rosen (New York Times), Rabbi Peter Rubinstein (92nd Street Y), Hilan Warshaw (Documentarian) & Björn Wiman (Swedish Daily News) with a special appearance by Johan Rabaeus (Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre), and a musical performance by Freudenthal Yiddish Orchestra.
The event was produced by Lizzie Oved Scheja for Judisk Kultur i Sverige (J! Jewish Culture in Sweden), an organization aimed at initiating and implementing cultural programs that attach to the multifaceted Jewish cultural heritage and Jewish thinking. The J! International Symposium's Jewish New York was an exciting program on Jewish immigration to NYC and its great impact on the city's culture life with a focus on Broadway, film, music, stand-up, and literature. Dinners were hosted for the panelists at local VIPs' homes including Literary Critic Monica Nagler Wittgenstein and her husband Gerald Nagler, a recipient of the Austrian Cross of Honor for his humanitarian efforts, J! Chairman; Lennart Schuss, and Program Director; Lizzie Oved Scheja. The founders and advisors; Lars Dencik, Jackie Jakubowski, Lizzie Oved Scheja and Monica Nagler Wittgenstein are happy with the progress of their six year old Jewish Culture institution in Sweden and are already putting the program together for next years symposium.
