Tonight was the opening night of the monologue The Grandad, written by Bjarni Haukur Thorsson. The granddad is played by Allan Svensson. Allan Svensson most famous character is probably Gustaf Svensson from the series Svensson, Svensson and the Christmas program from it is broadcasted prime time each Christmas Eve in Sweden. In Svensson Svensson he played the dad, but now the years have passed and he is 67 so it is time to become a grandfather.
Allan play himself as a grandfather, but it could have been anyones grandad. He is the grandpa who thought when the kids finally moved out that now there would be time for him and his wife, time for golf with his friends but what happened? All of a sudden the first grandchild comes and he ends up at the end on his wife's priority list. Is it possible to play golf the weekends when they babysit the grandchildren? The anecdotes of grandchildren are mixed with general observations about aging and a memory that begins to fail. What is it in life that leaves an imprint?
It is a gentle and funny play from a grandfather's perspective on life. The recognition factor is high regardless of what age you have, you see it from different perspectives. A play which is perfect for grownup kids to see together with their parents and grandparents.
It will be played in Stockholm till the 9th of February and then it will tour around Sweden ending in Karlstad the 14th of April.
