Jesus Christ Superstar
During the Prideweek in Stockholm a very special version of Jesus Christ Superstar will be played at the Eric Ericsson Hall. It's been granted exclusive rights to produce "Jesus Christ Superstar" with a predominantly female cast. Opening night is the 27th of July, 2 shows the 30th of July and 2 shows the 1st of August..
This iconic rock musical depicts Jesus's final days from Judas's perspective in a very human narrative. It's the first time in Sweden that Jesus, Judas and the Disciples are portrayed by women. We challenge old ideas about how the work is to be presented and draw parallels between Jesus's tribulations and the feminist struggle.
Our unique angle is more relevant now than ever before. With movements like #MeToo, public awareness of women's exposed situation within the arts-as well as in society at large-is at its peak. Female stories are rarely portrayed. According to statistics published by the feminist group Sparq, of the 24 musicals played in Sweden between 2015-2017, female characters had a mere 32% of the stage time. "Jesus Christ Superstar," for example, has 17 male characters and 1 female. Our interpretation explores completely new angles and implications.
This production consists of dedicated performing artists, both on stage and behind the scenes, all of whom are volunteering their time. Your contribution will enable us to be in the forefront of redefining and expanding the horizons of music theater in Sweden.
